Stormwater Management Modeling in “Sponge City” Construction: Current State and Future Directions

In response to urban pluvial flooding and pollution, the Chinese government proposed a “sponge city” policy in 2013 that aims improve stormwater management promote sustainable development. However, at present, sponge city construction is still its exploratory stage. It not clear which models are capable of simulating six key processes (i.e., “retention,” “infiltration,” “storage,” “purification,” “discharge,” “utilization”) practices. Its various benefits (e.g., social, economic environmental benefits) have yet been systematically investigated context city. this study, we reviewed compared 19 (including 13 hydrological 10 decision-support tools, as there 4 overlap ones) their application China. Firstly, examined mechanisms behind abilities simulate processes. Secondly, analyzed what kinds can be addressed by these decision support tools (DSTs). Finally, discussed applications limitations climate zones The findings suggest none consider impact change on practices (SCP) DSTs negative performance SCP. Furthermore, lack sufficient databases China limited many models. Additionally, found corresponding “storage” were given more attention southern China, “infiltration” was greater concern northern construction, paper provides suggestions for future model development such database incorporation long-term impacts into model.
